So hopefully, whatever cultural event you chose to participate in, you did so with sensitivity and openness. And NOT like the stereotypical tourist:
In your Culture Vulture Reading Journal due at the end of this module, please write a 2-4 page essay (longer is okay, too) that:
describes the experience as richly as you can (what did you see? hear? smell? feel?)
makes connections between the experience and our readings and course ideas (please try to use vocabulary we've used in class this semester--words like "binary" or "emic" or "ethnographic" or "constructed"),
uses self-reflection to explain what the impact of the experience on you, your thinking, your biases. and so on.
In writing, please be careful NOT to stereotype or to make sweeping generalizations. For example, if you went to a Greek Festival and saw three overweight men eating Greek food, don't write that Greek guys are all fat and like to eat. Obviously.
Thanks for being sensitive, as always, to others' experiences and how they may differ from your own. I'm looking forward to reading these!
