Course Description

This is an initial course in management with emphasis upon the principles and techniques of the managerial process in business. The basic concepts of management planning, organizing, directing, staffing, and controlling are related to the operations of businesses. Recent implications of social theory, communications theory, and group functions are considered. Case studies are used as a vehicle to enable students to apply theory to practice.

Prerequisites

Preparing for College Reading II (ENGL092) and Introductory Writing (ENGL099) and Fundamentals of Mathematics (MATH010).

Course Objectives

  • To gain an appreciation of past management practices and how management theory has changed.
  • To understand the different leadership styles and be able to know when to apply these styles.
  • To gain an understanding of motivated behavior.
  • To understand the importance people play in organizations.
  • To improve decision-making.
  • To be able to deal with conflict and change in today’s rapidly changing business environment.
  • To understand how the management functions interrelated and can be applied.

Course Description

This course introduces operating conditions and management responsibilities in casinos, and related properties and services. Gaming history and regulations are covered, as are modern gaming laws, controls, taxes, accounting, reporting, marketing, and the mathematics and statistics of games and casinos.

Prerequisites (effective Summer 2011): Preparing for College Reading II (ENGL 092), Introductory Writing (ENGL 099) and Introductory Algebra (MATH 101), waiver by placement testing results, or Departmental Approval.

Teaching Methods

Students will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods. To develop your communication, analytic, computing, and problem-solving abilities as well as your understanding of course concepts, the following learning experiences will be available throughout the semester.  

  • Instructor presentation and student online discussion of key concepts and their application;
  • Written assignments to further develop your abilities and understanding of key concepts within the business;
  • Use of the Internet to complete exercises and research;
  • Study groups and the use of the Academic Resource Center to increase student success.

Objectives

  1. To develop an understanding of Casino Management as it applies to current business problems whether on the local, state, or national level;
  2. To develop knowledge of specific subject matter areas in operational management within Casinos , specifically focusing on unique issues facing the gaming industry.
  3. To develop an understanding and working knowledge of Hospitality regulations in relationship managing casino operations;
  4. For each student to be able to practically apply the basic management and marketing techniques used with casino industry.
  5. The goal is to develop the students to develop critical thinking skills needed by manages to analyze casino operations.

 

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance in business courses is considered necessary to successful student performance. To successfully complete is course, contributing online to class each week with assignments complete and be prepared to actively participate in your own learning. Attendance will be taken each week via analysis of your participation online.

Assignments

With the Exception of week 01, each week starts on Monday, at 12:01 AM and Ends every Sunday at 11:59 PM. Week 01 officially starts on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 12:01 AM.

Assignment are due 11:59 PM on the day specified in the assignment or discussion Please take care to submitted your work prior to that time. The following is a guide to help you meet the assignment due dates by the days of the week:

  • Day 01 = Monday
  • Day 02 = Tuesday
  • Day 03 = Wednesday
  • Day 04 = Thursday
  • Day 05 = Friday
  • Day 06 = Saturday
  • Day 07 = Sunday

In order for you to be successful in this course, it is imperative for you to complete the homework problems. Homework assignments are to be submitted online via WebCT. Homework is a very important part of your final grade. Therefore, LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. While I do not aspect your homework to always be perfect, I do expect an honest attempt at completing the assigned problem. This tells me and you what you’re having trouble understanding. Homework is assigned to help you succeed in this class. Students are encouraged to work with other students outside of class in completing problems and studying for exams. You will find this extremely helpful in getting you through this course or any other course. Remember the adage: Two heads are better than one. Many students do meet online using Skype.

All assignments and discussions have due dates. It is your responsibility to meet these deadlines, with is vital for class participation and your successful completion of the class.

Your final grade will be based on the work you complete during the semester. Grading will be based on the following:
